Pilots love their technology. Variometer altimeters, GPS, SPOT plotters, mobile phones, e-readers, anything with a digital display. And with a solar cell to power it, it's even better.

The LeBipBip mini audio vario
This solar-powered vario was designed and built by a student paragliding pilot engineer in France. On a full charge, it can operate for 100 hours, with a clear, easy-to-understand sound in the air. What is perhaps most remarkable about this project is that the assembly of the vario is carried out by disadvantaged and disabled people in the designer's home town. It's a brilliant, community-based solution that puts us all in a better light in the eyes of local people. The special exhibition price was €95, including worldwide shipping.
